What Every Car Owner Should Know About Timing Belts

Last updated 6 years ago

A vehicle’s timing belt connects the camshaft and crankshaft to ensure that the pistons and valves operate together in proper sequence.  In other words, a timing belt is like the conductor of an orchestra, keeping the whole network of engine parts in time with each other.  When a timing belt breaks, the different parts of an engine do not operate in sequence and the vehicle won’t run—it is as simple as that.  If you live by the Palo Alto, Los Altos, Sunnyvale and Mountain View areas please only trust a professional auto repair shop like A1 Auto Tech. We keep your American or Japanese made vehicle running for as long as you own it. In the meantime, please consider the following information on timing belts:

  • The Importance Of Synchronization- There are four essential phases of an engine: intake, compression, combustion, and exhaust. The timing belt synchronizes these four phases, controlling when the pistons fire and when the valves open and close. If the timing belt breaks, the valves and pistons will continue to move irrespective of each other. Because nothing is there to synchronize their movements, the engine will fail to run and can be seriously damaged.
  • The Difference Between Interference And Non-Interference Engines- If the timing belt breaks in a vehicle with a non-interference engine, then there is little chance of severe mechanical damage; the car simply will not run.  Vehicles with interference engines, however, may sustain major damage when the timing belt breaks. The valves and pistons share the same space, and without the timing belt to guide them, the pistons can hit the valves, resulting in the need for expensive and timely repairs. | Timing Belt Repairs Mountain View |
  • When To Replace A Vehicle’s Timing Belt- No matter what type of engine you have, it is always wise to periodically check the condition of the timing belt and replace it at the recommended intervals (usually anywhere between 60,000 to 105,000 miles).  Visit the Gates Website for a full list of recommended timing belt intervals.  As with any preventative maintenance, by replacing the timing belt when you are supposed to, you can avoid major damage to your vehicle and much higher auto repair bills.
